Purgatory Ridge Rough Riders

I read about this Cowboy Action Shooting Club(CASC) in Lubbock the other day, and decided to check out one of their shootouts, and do some sketching and collect some reference while I was at it. It was a lot of fun and they were very gracious. Check out their site at www.purgatoryridgerr.com. Also, I've uploaded my photos to HERE and below are a few of the sketches I did. By the way, that guy in orange is a REAL cowboy. His name's Conagher. He's awesome! --Will

Rough Riders

Found out about this group here in Lubbock that dresses up in authentic cowboy gear to shoot six-shooters at old west town style targets. Brandon and I are gonna check it out tomorrow and do some sketchen'. I did this quick sketch from one of the pictures in the paper about the group. Think it turned out pretty good. I'll post more if we get to sketch some tomorrow. --Will

Bar Sketches - 2

This is another one of the sketches I did at the bar last night. But I decided to color it. This is way exaggerated, this bouncer guy wasn't quite this hard core. But he was close enough that it was easy to go this way. Fun sketch. --Will

Bar Sketches

I've been kind of lonely artistically lately. Missing my sketching friends in San Diego. Decided to go out tonight and draw some folks. Went to the bar with my girlfriend tonight and sketched the scenery. Been a while since I sketched people for fun. It was just that-- fun! ...and refreshing. I even got a bunch of free shots for Leigh, and my beer was paid for. Not bad. I did quite a few more sketches than this. But ended up giving most of them away. I think I'll be doing more of this. It felt nice.

Card art B/w

Someone asked me if I could post the B/w for that card art from yesterday. I was really happy with the pencils on this. Some of my best work. The original is about 5x7. --Will

Gulliver - Promotional art

I designed this card back in november for WizardWorld Texas. It's promotional artwork for the Gulliver comic book that I'm working on for Ape Entertainment. The character depicted is "engine". He is a robot that basically runs Gulliver's steam ship. He's a fun character. I was going for an ambiguous mood for this character. Envoking some mystery, without looking too sinister. I think it came off well. I'm really excited about this series. --Will

Gargoyle's - Page Two

Old Man - Digital Sketch

This was about a 25 minute sketch in photoshop. I was working from Ron Lemen's digital painting tutorial. Ron was one of my teacher's at the Atelier. And he's a master at photoshop... and pretty much anything. This ended up looking more like a caricature of the original than a portrait. Probably because I didn't lay it in correctly. I also found that I didn't know where to go from here to make it actually look like a portrait. Lots to learn I guess. It was still fun to do. --Will

My Valentine

Quick sketch for my valentine Leigh. This is pretty much the first year I've ever had a girlfriend on Valentines. I can dig it. So this was, Marker and pencil. About 2 hours. --Will

Gulliver - Page One

Finally got the site back up. Thanks Brandon. Page one of Gulliver is now colored, I'm very happy with it. I'm not usually this happy with my work, but this is definitely a new leap for me. I think the extra research really paid off. Now I've got to color page two. --Will

Planets

Starting to get ready to color some pages from my comic book series. Before I start I want to get a few things down in photoshop. Mostly learning a few textures and filters that I'll need. Opening scene is a space scene. With planets, stars and a shiney gold ship. I started with the planets. I found this amazing tutorial from Greg Martin on it. God this makes my life easier. Thanks Greg Martin!! Wherever you are! Then I futzed around learning how to make outer space look like outer space. Then the biggest problem was figuring out how to do metal and especially gold. Found a few good tutorials on the subject. Best of all was this little one from www.myjanee.com on drawing what you see. Really big help. Now we'll see if I can apply it to the pages. --Will

Gift for friends

I did this caricature for my friend Brandon and his wife. Getting better at doing colors, even with marker and board. --Will

Commission

This was a rush commission. I think it's a postcard for another fair. Someone sent me the line art and wanted me to color it. The lines were super simplistic. Very flat and plain. I have a tendancy to "own" what I'm working on, just to keep myself from getting bored. So instead of coloring it flat, I went ultra "painterly" with it. It ended up being a lot of fun. --Will

Sketching

Really happy with this one. This is actually a reproduction of another artists work. Can't remember what the website was, or else I'd link to it. Just so the reader knows this is a reproduction. Some of it I feel like I did better. But in general I still feel like I have a lot to learn. Having fun though. I feel like a kid with a brand new toy. --Will

Sketching

Another quick digital sketch. Really working on lighting. Having trouble getting it tight enough. But I figure if I do enough of these I'll start to get the hang of it. It's amazing how easy it is to just hint at things, to get a realistic look. Having to learn to resist the temptation to get "too" detailed. --Will

Sketching

Practicing some digital sketching. Flexing my artistic muscles before I begin coloring a three issue comic book series in the next few weeks. This was supposed to be a showdown between a soldier and a mech. But I didn't like how the mech was turning out so I cut it. But I'm pretty happy with the figure. And starting to get into reflective light. I love my wacom. --Will
